Argentina vs Germany Live

Argentina vs Germany Live: Two of world football’s heavyweights, Germany and Argentina boast no fewer than six FIFA World Cups between them, with three of their previous meetings coming in the tournament showpiece itself.

The atmosphere should be a little more relaxed at the Signal Iduna Park this week, but Joachim Löw will still be expecting a disciplined performance from his side, just four days ahead of a crunch EURO 2020 qualifying trip to Tallinn. Marc-Andre ter Stegen takes the place of captain Manuel Neuer in goal, while at the other end of the pitch, Serge Gnabry will be looking to continue his recent hot streak. Usual partners in crime Marco Reus and Timo Werner are out with knee injuries and a cold respectively, however. Matthias Ginter, Ilkay Gündogan and Toni Kroos all pulled out of the initial squad with injury. They have been replaced by Schalke midfielder Suat Serdar, Freiburg defender Robin Koch and versatile Hoffenheim man Sebastian Rudy, who has been been recalled.

Argentina are without a host of their biggest names in Dortmund. Angel Di Maria and Sergio Aguero have been left out of Lionel Scaloni’s squad, while captain and talisman Lionel Messi is still serving a three-month ban issued by CONMEBOL for comments made at this summer’s Copa America. The South Americans will also be without players from bitter domestic rivals River Plate and Boca Juniors, who go head-to-head in the second leg of the Copa Libertadores semi-finals later this month. Löw will be careful to warn his players against any complacency, however. The visitors still boast talented stars such as Juventus’s Paulo Dybala and Atletico Madrid’s Angel Correa, while Inter Milan striker Lautaro Martinez scored a hat-trick in last month’s 4-0 friendly win over Mexico. Scaloni confirmed his starting line-up on Wednesday afternoon, with his three Germany-based players – Leverkusen’s Lucas Alario, Borussia Dortmund’s Leonardo Balerdi and VfB Stuttgart’s Nicolas Gonzalez – all on the bench.

Team news

Argentina

Coach Lionel Scaloni is trying to build the future generation of the Argentinian squad and has left out Angel Di Maria, Mauro Icardi and Sergio Aguero.

Juventus star Paulo Dybala will be part of that new generation but has yet to deliver for his country as much as his club; scoring just twice in 26 international appearances.

Relative newcomer Lautaro Martinez, 22, may provide the answer Scaloni is looking for, with the Inter Milan player expected to lead the front line after scoring a hat-trick against Mexico.

Germany

Joachim Löw is also trying to rebuild his German squad with young newcomers like Serge Gnabry, who has had an impressive season so far at Bayern Munich.

Manuel Neuer looks set to be replaced by FC Barcelona ’s Marc-Andre ter Stegen in a much-debated switch.

Kai Havertz the youngest player to reach 50 Bundesliga appearances at 18 years old will also be part of the squad.

Germany vs Argentina
International friendly
Venue: Signal Iduna Park, Dortmund
Kick-off time: 7:45pm BST

In a rematch of the 2014 World Cup final, Germany welcome Argentina to Signal Iduna Park tonight as they aim to take the bragging rights once again.

Joachim Low’s side edged a close encounter with Mario Gotze’s extra-time winner proving to be decisive in Rio de Janeiro.

The Albiceleste have undergone a huge shake-up since then, with Lionel Messi retiring from international football and then making a U-turn.

Now under the guidance of former coach Lionel Scaloni, once on the books at West Ham United, the Latin American side are out for revenge five years later.

Predicted line-up

Manchester City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan (muscle) and centre-back Jonathan Tah (ilness) have been ruled out for the friendly, leaving Germany boss Joachim Low with a long injury list.

Dortmund striker Marco Reus is also a doubt for the clash following a knee injury and may not be risked, Low revealed in his pre-match press conference.

“We will have to see. He will train this evening and then we will see if it makes sense to use him.

“It is not a situation I wished and would want. It is not an ideal situation. It is rare to have so many absences.”

Scaloni took the unusual step of announcing his Argentina lineup a day before the game, with Premier League quartet Juan Foyth, Nicolas Otamendi, Marcos Rojo and Roberto Pererya all set to start.

Germany XI: Ter Stegen; Stark, Sule, Koch; Klostermann, Kimmich, Rudy, Halstenberg; Gnabry, Brandt; Reus.

Argentina XI: Marchesin; Foyth, Otamendi, Rojo, Tagliafico; Pereyra, Paredes, De Paul, Angel Correa; Dybala, Martinez.

Prediction: Germany 1-1 Argentina

Germany’s injury crisis means they are down to the bare bones against Argentina, a side blessed with the individual talents of Paulo Dybala and Lautaro Martinez in attack.

Based on their recent form, the hosts would be favourites to take this but may find life difficult with an untested side at international level.

THE TEAM NEWS

SOUTH AFRICA

South Africa knew they had to beat Italy and they did not disappoint as they proved far too good for their Pool B counterparts and were helped along the way by an early second half red card for the Italians.

The Springboks made 13 changes to the side they named for the Italy game and as expected, they have decided to heavily rotate once again for this one after all-but sealing their place in the quarter-finals.

Head coach Rassie Erasmus has made 13 changes once again and named mostly a second-string side with captain Siya Kolisi kept in the side to build his fitness whilst Damian de Allende switches to outside centre.
CANADA

Canada were on the end of a huge loss to New Zealand as they failed to cross the whitewash and will be out to avoid a similar result as they face another of the tournament’s heavyweight teams in South Africa.

The Canadians will look to give game time to more of their squad for this clash and have made six changes but one surprising omission is Djustice Sears-Duru who will have to settle for a place among the replacements.

Fullback Andrew Coe is the only Canadian to cross the whitewash so far in this tournament and has been handed his first start of the competition whilst Hubert Buydens, Andrew Quattrin and Jake Ilnicki will form a new front row.
THE PREDICTION

South Africa were ruthless in their vital clash against Italy and took full advantage of the Italians being reduced to 14-men early in the second half. The Springboks have opted to rotate ahead of what should be a quarter-final contest after this game but they are still capable of winning big. The Canadians have only scored one try from their two games so far and their quest will be to get at least one to their name here but they could be on the end of another heavy loss.

South Africa vs Canada Live

South Africa vs Canada Live: South Africa captain Siya Kolisi accepts his side will be taking a leap into the unknown when they face Canada for the first time in nearly 20 years as they look to book their place in the World Cup quarter-finals.

Watch Live Here

A bonus-point win for the Springboks will all but assure the two-time world champions of entry into the last eight.

Tuesday’s Pool B match at the Kobe Misaki Stadium will be just the third time the two countries have met, and the first since South Africa’s 51-18 victory over Canada in East London in 2000 – when current Springbok head coach Rassie Erasmus was playing for the home side.

Kolisi, who will be starting his third match in four games as he continues his return to match-fitness after a knee injury, said a South Africa side showing 13 changes from the team that beat Italy 49-3 last time had to focus on their own performance.

South Africa could face Japan in the quarter-finals in a repeat of the ‘Miracle of Brighton’ when the Brave Blossoms stunned the Springboks 34-32 in the greatest World Cup upset of them all four years ago.

Japan are currently unbeaten at this edition having produced another shock win with a 19-12 success over Ireland, and Springboks assistant coach Mzwandile Stick said: “At the moment, the focus is just on the game we are playing.
